Thursday 16th January – Vancouver … then home

Last day today so we had a late start – sleeping in, having a late breakfast after packing up (and trying to fit everything in!). After breakfast we walked (35 mins) to Stanley Park and the aquarium. There was snow again while we were breakfasting – really large flakes actually – but then the sunContinue reading “Thursday 16th January – Vancouver … then home”

Wednesday 15th January : Vancouver

We headed out to a cafe called Tractor Foods this morning for breakfast – excellent breakfast wraps. Then off walking … discoverying the beautiful Art Deco Marine building on the way. We then continued walking …. …. (about 35 mins) headed to Granville Island – food markets, cafes and restaurant, craft markets and shops. ItContinue reading “Wednesday 15th January : Vancouver”

Tuesday 14th January: Vancouver

After breakfast at the hotel, we headed off for the historic part of Vancouver, Gastown, named after ‘Gassy’ Jack Deighton, a Yorkshire seaman, steamboat captain and barkeep who arrived in 1867 to open the area’s first saloon. (We think Gassy because of his storytelling which was apparently legendary; Nick had his own theories 😀). ItContinue reading “Tuesday 14th January: Vancouver”

Monday 13th January: Whistler to Vancouver

Sadly time to pack up this morning – took a few last photos of the apartment and surrounds, including the icicles off the roof! We were picked up at 11am and set off for Vancouver, about a 2 hour drive. Upon arriving at the Hyatt in Vancouver, we dropped bags and went to a restaurantContinue reading “Monday 13th January: Whistler to Vancouver”

Sunday 12th January: Whistler

This morning I had booked a snowshoeing activity – we went up in the Whistler gondola and then to a trail – it was actually a mountain biking trail – just beautiful walking through the trees! Surprisingly easy to walk – the shoes have crampons underneath to grip. Meanwhile, Cate, Nigel and Nick had skiedContinue reading “Sunday 12th January: Whistler”

Tuesday 7th January – Friday 10th January : Whistler, Canada

On our first day here, we tested out our rusty snow skills in the morning and then did a family lesson in the afternoon – the lesson was good but in hindsight it probably would have been better to do lessons individually as we are all at different levels. Annie decided that skiing was notContinue reading “Tuesday 7th January – Friday 10th January : Whistler, Canada”

Monday 6th January : Los Angeles to Vancouver and onto Whistler

Up at 4:25 this morning for a 7:20 flight to Vancouver (Annie definitely not pleased with the early flight schedule!). An easy three hour flight with Air Canada. We were picked up from Vancouver airport by a shuttle to take us to Whistler – Roy was our driver : he owns a bunch of accommodationContinue reading “Monday 6th January : Los Angeles to Vancouver and onto Whistler”

Sunday 5th January – Los Angeles

We decided on an early start this morning as we only had one day in LA. 7am breakfast in the hotel cafe and off to hike the Hollywood Hills! We took a Lyft (ride share taxi like Uber) to the Griffith Observatory for some great views. We had thought we would hike to the HollywoodContinue reading “Sunday 5th January – Los Angeles”

Saturday 4th January 2020: Santa Barbara to Los Angeles

Morning walk – Nick and I (Cate and Nigel biked) … so beautiful down the Californian coast. We enjoyed the included breakfast at the hotel, packed up and headed for the Getty Villa (I booked ahead this time!) … about 1.5 hrs drive from Santa Barbara. The Villa is a recreation of an ancient RomanContinue reading “Saturday 4th January 2020: Santa Barbara to Los Angeles”
